Baby Critter Tuesday!

August 12, 2014

Today was a great second day of Turtle Adventures and Field Experiences Week 10! We had a great time teaching the younger campers about sea turtle nesting and the older campers about the food web and sharks.

Field experiences campers (14-17 years old) had an exciting day today! They began the day by examining different plant and animal species on the Tropical Hammock trail. Then the campers enjoyed some beach time, which included team building activities and a game titled “Hatchling Frenzy.”
Afterward, campers returned from lunch time and heard a lecture about sharks. Then, they spent the rest of the afternoon dissecting several sharks! The three sharks were pregnant, and one of them even had ten fish still contained in her stomach!

Turtle Adventures campers (6-10 years old) had a fun beach day today! They started the day by listening to a presentation about the different kinds of nesting habits that Green, Leatherback, and Loggerhead sea turtles have. Then the campers headed to the beach for beach time and nesting games. Afterward, the campers came back to the center, had lunch, and then enjoyed a special treat: the campers got to see some of the hatchlings found by the research department earlier today! Then, campers made posters and presented them to the group about nesting sea turtles. Then, campers got to see the sharks the older kids dissected and had a short demonstration about sharks.
